Frequently Asked Questions
What makes your tour different from other zipline tours in Alaska?
Our tour is located in a beautiful sub-alpine setting in the Tongass National Forest. Since we are located up higher, our tour provides panoramic mountain views with the headwaters to salmon spawning streams running below you. Our tour has uniquely designed treehouses constructed with green building materials. We also have a unique, mechanical braking system so that you do not have to put your hands on the cables to slow yourself down. Our platforms have hand rails for your comfort and peace of mind, too. We are also a small company, locally owned and operated, not a franchise operation, and we are one of the few “Green” tour operators in Alaska. Finally, one of our owners is on the International Canopy/Zipline Tour Committee, and we get regular course inspections through ACCT that allow us to maintain our safety record. We offer discount pricing for children.
How do I get to your location?
Don’t worry. Be happy. We provide free round-trip transportation from the downtown Juneau/cruise dock area (in front of the Mount Roberts Tram to be exact). A detailed description of where to meet, including a map, will be provided when you book your tour.
How long does the tour take?
From the moment we pick you up until the moment we return you to the cruise dock area, the tour takes approximately 3.5-3.75 hours.
I am coming in on a cruise ship. How should I book my excursion?
If you are traveling with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, Lindblad, Entrée Alaska, or Off the Beaten Path and you want to do the zipline tour offered on their website, please book directly with them. Otherwise, you can book the Zipline Tour or any of our Combination Tours directly on our website anytime.
Why do you have age and weight restrictions for your tour?
This tour was built and tested to bring people who weigh between 70-250 lbs at the appropriate speeds across the cables. In order to minimize risk of injury, we do not recommend that people outside of that weight range come on our tour. People ages 10 and above are allowed on our tour. This age was determined collaboratively with our builders and insurance company based on the maturity level required for an active tour of this nature.
What have you done to ensure your tour is safe?
Our course is routinely inspected to meet or exceed the ANSI-accredited ACCT guidelines. The steel cable that was used to build our course can hold 27,000 lbs, and we have installed back-up cables throughout the course as well so you are clipped into 2 lines rather than just one. You will be clipped in by your guides throughout the entire tour, and you have a back-up clip in point to put your mind at ease. All of our gear meets National Fire Protection Agency standards, and our guides go through extensive safety training and have First Aid & CPR certifications. They will give you a detailed briefing before the tour begins, and you can take comfort in knowing that thousands of happy customers have zipped through our tour before you.
How will I slow down safely when I am zipping across the cables?
Our course does not require participants to "hand brake" themselves. We have a system designed to bring people onto the platforms appropriately, and we have a back-up mechanical brake that the guide controls so you are not responsible for putting your hands on the cables to slow yourself down. Hand braking can lead to injuries if the participant is not careful, so we have eliminated that risk to enhance your personal experience.
What qualifies you as an Eco-Tour?
We do everything possible to minimize our impact on the environment. We do not use ATVs or high speed boats, and we built the tour in the old growth forest over flowing streams where there is a natural clearing of trees to minimize the impact. We are currently in the process of becoming a "certified green" business. Our lodge runs on hydro-electric power in the summer, we try to avoid using disposable products, and we offer you all organic cotton merchandise in our gift shop. We try to select partners who reflect our values of minimizing our carbon footprint whenever possible.
Do you offer group or travel agent discounts?
Typically, we do not offer discounts. This year, for the first time, we are offering shoulder season discounts in May and September, but they may not last long. You can click “Book a Tour” anywhere on the site to check prices for the dates you will be in Juneau. Group discounts begin with 12 or more people. Please email us for group pricing at info@alaskazip.com. We only offer a commission to travel agents who book more than 1 tour with our company. On the 2nd date that a travel agent books a tour with us, please give us a call and we can discuss an ongoing commission contract with you.
How many zips are on your tour?
Our tour consists of 7 ziplines, 10 platforms and an aerial suspension bridge (with a cable we clip you into above that and hand rails to hold onto along the way).
Do I need to sign a waiver?
Yes, all participants must sign a waiver before participating in the tour. The waivers are provided at the lodge upon arrival at the tour location.
I have a 15 year old who would like to do the tour on his own. Is that possible?
Unfortunately, no. Our policy is that children 15 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children who are 16 or 17 can come on the tour without a parent or guardian, but they must have the liability waiver signed by their parent or guardian in advance. Adults ages 18 and above may come on the tour anytime without parental consent.
